Siblings Together X

It is done ! We started several months ago with a call from Lynn to support the 'Sibling Together' Charity. It was quickly decided to support the charity's summer camps with quilts that the siblings can gift each other. And so we all started with great enthusiasm and more importantly even greater action. Quilts were made and are still being made in all corners of the world. I was one of those who volunteered to piece quilts together from individual blocks.

My own call to support the charity was met with such a flurry of activity that for weeks on end I had almost daily deliveries of packages containing wonderful log cabin blocks (please use the search bar on the blog to the right to look for entries called 'Siblings Together').

And the outcome of all this are four wonderful quilts that are now on their way to the charity right in time for the start of the summer camps at the end of July.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank each and everyone who contributed to the project.
First of all of course Lynn for her call "to arms", then of course each and everyone who sent me blocks. You guys rock ! You sent me blocks from as far way as Australia, Israel, the Eastern European countries, Canada, Germany, Holland, Norway...... and of course the UK.

Then I would like to thank the sponsors who generously gave fabric and wadding; thanks are going to Corinne and Tina for Tikki Ltd. who donated backing fabric for two quilts and to the ladies of the LMQG who donated wadding that went a long way in making those quilts.

Thanks also go to Laura who organized the labels for the quilts which I believe where in turn sponsored by Spoonflower.

It has been an enormous pleasure to work on these quilts and I am quite frankly the happiest person that I was able to help organise this.

Siblings Together IX

It's been a little while since I posted an update on the Log cabin Quilt Project for Siblings Together.
But I have been busy working on the project over the past couple of weeks and have managed to
create 4 quilts backs, baste 4 quilts and quilt 4 quilts.

So all I have left to do now is the binding, labeling and of course delivering the beauties to the charity.

This will all be done over the next weeks or so and I will of course keep you all posted.

Enjoy your hopefully sunny weekend. The sun is shining here in London (at the moment) and I'll keep fingers and toes crossed that it will remain like this.

Siblings Together VIII

A quick update on the Log cabin Quilt Project for Siblings Together.

By mid last week I had received the remainder of the blocks and this first lovely set here is from Harry who is 12 years old. Well done Harry !

The next set is from Kim who contacted me two weeks ago when she read my block and offered to help. These will add great highlights to the quilts.

And the last set is from Liz who incidentally is Harry's mother. I do love Laura Wisbrun's fabrics.

And I went straight to work after I had the blocks and made 3 (three !) quilt tops which makes the total 4 including the already pieced top from Joanne.

I pieced two larger quilt tops that are multicolored and fairly gender neutral. I love how each block gives the quilt tops their own little story.

And one smaller quilt for which I reserved most of the more girly colored blocks. I added a border in two different shades of vibrant pink to complete the picture.

Siblings Together VII

Yes it is the weekend and time to report on the blocks I have received for the 'Siblings Together' log cabin project. I received 6 sets of fantastic blocks from all over the world, this really has turned into an international effort. I am fairly certain that these are almost the last blocks I to arrive at my house; there might just be one or two stragglers still on their way. 

Please do not sent anymore blocks as I will start assembling the quilts this coming week and need to be sure that I have them all to ensure that I can achieve balanced colour designs.

Let's see what we got this week:

First there is an arrival from Riga in Latvia from Fiona who sent me what I believe is 20 beautiful blocks. I think somebody really enjoyed making this block !

Second is post from Canada from Felicity who sent below gorgeous blocks:

Third in the race is Christine from Israel who sent twelve blocks that are just marvelous. I so love those dogs.

The fourth entry came all the way from Australia from Danielle and you know those blocks do remind me of the dark red earth in the outback (a long time ago)

Number five is from Nikki who I believe lives here in the UK. She even put in a little Heather Ross which always makes my heart beat faster.

And lastly Moira blocks which I believe also come from the UK finally arrived. I love the combination with the solids, so striking.

As mentioned in the beginning I will start assembling quilts in the coming week and will post regular (though not weekly) updates on the progress. By the looks of it I have enough blocks for 3 quilts. I am aiming to have them all done by the end of July. 

I'd like to take the opportunity  to sent you all a heartfelt thank you for your contributions. I am convinced the quilts will look fantastic and three kids/teenager will be made very happy.

Siblings Together VI

It is the weekend and I am again reporting on the blocks I have received for the 'Siblings Together' log cabing project. This will be the second last post on received blocks as I am starting to piece the quilt tops next weekend. 

I know some blocks are still in transit and I will of course wait for those but if you still wish to participate please ensure that the blocks reach me no later then the 15th of May.

Set No 3 is from Sarah who evidently was inspired by a zoo and airplanes. Just fantastic !

And set No 4 is from Nicolette who sent us a whole host of blocks in gorgeous warm colors. Lots of Hope Valley in there which always makes my heart go faster.

I have also received the labels for the quilts (kindly sponsored by Spoonflower and organized by Laura)  and would like to pick your brains on what to write on the section "made by". I don't think "Log cabin group" or something along those lines is suitable and for practical reason I can't put all our names on the label.

I am actually thinking of using cartoon names, such as "Miss Piggy' or "Kermit". Something that is fun has a personal touch and is recognizable to kits.

What do you think ? Do you have any other suggestions ?

Over the past week I received two sets blocks; one from Colette and one from Jennie.

The first set is from Colette who is also a fellow member of the London Modern Quilt guilt and the two of us with a few others are of to Lucie Summers tomorrow for a screen printing workshop (just to get  you all jealous.....) Anyway back to 'Siblings Together', Collette made these great striking blocks for the cause.

The second equally striking and colourful  set is from Jennie and if I wouldn't know it any better I'd say they have been working together on these as they are quiet similar in colour choices. These will work great together.

The third parcel that arrived was from the Netherlands again and if I am not much mistaken then it the same Francis who already sent blocks last week !

Siblings Together III

Siblings Together II

Many of you will probably have heard by now of our sewing endeavors for the charity ' Siblings Together' which brings siblings together that have been separated through the UK care system in a summer camp in East London this year. Lynn, myself and many generous quilter are making and donating quilts for this camp.

You can find all the details on our flickr group, the charity itself, Lynn's blog or on my first post about 'Sibling Together'.

I volunteer to make quilts from received blocks and have been utterly overwhelmed by the positive response and the generosity of the quilting community.

Already this week I received 5 sets of blocks that I would like to share with you today !

The deadline for me to receive blocks is the 15th of May so still plenty of time if you fancy to joint us.
This thread will give you all the details to the blocks I would like to have.


I received the first set of lovely Pezze print blocks from Pennie last Sunday on our monthly LMQG meeting.

Then over the week the postman brought almost every day a wonderful little parcel. Next of was Sigrun from Norway who is also German like me and also live abroad. Don't you just love those wellingtons ? Perfect for boys and girls alike.

The third package that fluttered into my house was from the Netherlands from Francis. I love the strong colors and contrast in these blocks.

The fourth parcel was from Emily who made two wonderful blocks for girls and two for boys. I am so please that you ladies also think about the boys.

And the last parcel that arrived was from Sheila who send me those fantastic richly colored blocks.

I want to thank each of you for your most generous contribution to the project. I will collect all blocks until the 15th of May at which point I will start assembling quilts.

And I will also do a weekly post with updates on the blocks so everybody know what's going on.

Giving something back

The lovely Lynn from 'Lilly's quilts' became aware of a fantastic charity that tries to bring together siblings that have been separated by the UK care system. I can only imagine with a lot of difficulty how hard it would have been for me if I would have been separated from my sister or brother at a young age.

'Siblings together' have a summer camp running this summer where they are bringing together siblings to spend quality time with each other. Lynn's idea was to donate as many quilts as we can to the children and teenagers in the camp.

I for one think it is a great idea and I immediately volunteered to make a quilt out of received blocks (bit like a Bee without the Bee so to say) as I can imagine that there are a lot of quilters who are willing to help but may not have the time to make an entire quilt.

So here is the deal:

Anybody who wishes to participate and contribute one or a couple (as many as you wish) log cabin style blocks should head over to the flickr group and to my thread Project 1 and sign-up.

Imagine the smiles and warmth we can bring to those kids with a lovely handmade quilt.
