Springtime

....is finished.

Ha, but  only the quilt and not the season !

Spring is so wonderful this year in the UK. We have the best weather ever and after a little bit of rain on the weekend everything seems to be even more green and sparkly.

This quilt puts a smile on my face every time I look at it. It is so fresh and light (I know I said it before). So here are the pics and a few more details on the pattern etc.

You may remember from previous posts (here, here , here and here)  that I bought a fat quarter set of the entire Tanya Whelan 'Delilah' collection (and I have lots left actually). This is a fabulous and coherent collection in pattern and colour. I tried to ensure that I used the petite flowers on the smaller quilt pieces, i.e. the pinwheels and the 9-patch. I used the larger flowers for the outer brick pattern with the aim to use the versatile fabric pattern to its best potential.

The back is pieced as you can see and I made good use of leftovers and the solids I used on the front. I put a strip of the white on red dots onto the back too as I used this as the binding and wanted to make sure that the binding was offset on the both front and the back.

The finished quilt is 57 x 67 inches (that is 1.45 x 1.70 m) .

Here is a close-up of the binding. I love this choice as it adds a slightly different note to the quilt and in addition frames is perfectly. It just gives it that little something. I really think a quilt is made through its binding. What do you think ?

And of course one has to have a couple of sausage roll pictures in the set.

I used my favourite wadding which is Quilters Dream Select weight (100 % cotton). The quilt was machine quilted in straight lines that emphasis the front pattern. I used Guerterman Sulky 30 in col. 1071.

I am thinking of making a free downloadable pattern from the quilt and I wonder if anyone would be interested ?

Moving on to Springtime

The Single Girl Quilt is finished I am moving on to a new quilt and pattern. But first I want to thank you again for your comments on the finished quilt. I have read every single one of them and they all give me a huge boost.  Now, I should be working flat out on the Monochromatic Dresdens and in fact I have sewn together one of the rings, but I feel like doing something befitting to Spring at the moment. So I am going to have a little interlude before I go back to the Dresdens (this might also be because the one Dresden I did is not lying flat....grrhh)

You may have seen this fabric in my Stash Note No 2. 
This is Delilah from Tanya Whelan and I bought the entire collection a couple of month ago, in fact actually on Christmas Eve at the Eurostar terminal when I was sitting there waiting for my train to go back to Germany to my parents. It was such a miserable day as there were so many cancellation due to the horrid weather. So I cheered myself up by ordering fabric via my phone (as one does !)

And I feel now is the right time to make something with this fabulous collection. The colours reflect exactly what spring is all about, pale greens, blue, rose and white with a dash of red in between.

So I drew up a pattern, that you can see below together with coffee stain and scribbling in the margins.........

This is sort of my design process actually. I often don't use colour but just pencil as I want to look at forms first. This pattern is inspired by a quilt I saw at my local quilt shop Tikki but also by numerous other quilts that feature pinwheels. For a while I wanted to do pinwheels but I also wanted to team it with something else so I came up with this pattern where I have a set of pinwheels in the middle and then feature pin wheels again as corner stones. These I want to steadily increase in size. In between I want to use squares and bricks and several rows of sashing. And the best thing about pinwheels is that I can play with half square triangles again.

And this is how far I have gotten on Sunday......tonight its of the next round......
