Poppy - the finished quilt

This quilt for my goddaughter Poppy has been finished a while and it makes me and hopefully her very happy. I love the contrast in the colours and the symmetrical pattern with all the small figurative items that will give her plenty to point out.

To make it extra special I fussy cut all the trees and the dancing girls in the middle and corners. All the other gorgeous patterns are randomly cut.

It's fairly densely quilted in a crosshatch pattern every inch.

I quilted in a bright red Gueterman Sulky 28w threat which I absolutely love and it I think it works really well with the back too. This little piggy print has been sitting in my stash for several years now waiting to be used. I have the same in blue too but I guess that has to hang around on the shelf a bit longer.

Isn't it the cutest!

For the binding I used again a text print that allows you to read little wisdom phrases along the edge of the quilt.

Its a funny thing, I really hate seeing wise phrases on Tees or posters but here in the form of quilt binding I actually love it.....maybe because it's not quite so demonstrably in your face.

And the last picture...promise.

Poppy - a new work in progress

I became a godmother for the third and forth time a while back. My new gauddaughters are almost approaching their first birthdays so it was high time to make that all important first quilt for them. Goddaughter number 4, Poppy, is the first to receive a quilt.

I still have a sizable quantity of Annela Hoey's first two collections for Moda and saved these for something really special.

I love the whimsical, playful, very girly pattern and fussycut some of the designs, such as the trees and the playing children for maximum impact.

My favourite must be those chasing dogs though closely followed by the cool scootering girls.

The squares are 4 1/2 in which made the whole process quite easy and fast. I am planning to quilt in a nice straightforward 1/2 quilt pattern in a bright red threat. And I also have something really special planned for the quilt back. Watch the space !

A diamond quilt for Anya

The christening of my Goddaughter is this coming Sunday so it is high time for the quilt I started last week to be finished.

But before I show you the finished piece I would like to answer Sarah Witherby's question from pingandneedles because I think it might be interesting for everybody. Sarah wondered if it wasn't easier to first piece strips together and then cut 60 degree diamonds in order to avoid piecing so many diamonds.

I did a test on paper as you can see in the two images below. The first image shows you a piece of paper that simulated 9 coloured strips sewn together. I then drew 60 degree lines and cut strips. The second image shows you the arranged strips in the same pattern I did with the quilt.
My conclusion is that yes it is possible to do this but and it is a BIG but you end up having to sew in the end pieces (see overlarge arrow) as inset seams (something called Y seams) and you also end up with an awful lot of leftover fabric as you want to achieve  a square or rectangle format (see blue rectangle drawn).

I constructed my quilt by first cutting strips, then individual diamonds from the strips that I then lay out until I had a pleasing arrangement. I added the end and corner pieces and then sew the diagonal strips together thereby avoiding inset seams. I also don't think it is more difficult to sew diamonds together then for example squares or HST squares. The only thing that is a bit more tricky is to accurately meet the seams and to avoid stretching the bias cut diamonds. But I honestly didn't have many problems at all and will do this pattern anytime again.

And finally the finished quilt for the little Anya:
For the front I used mostly the 'Sherbet Pips' collection but added three other prints, mainly the yellow ones to offset the pinks, reds and  blues.

Now, I am not a friends of girly pink colours but somehow got carried away with them for the back. I don't know what gotten into me but I really like it.

The quilt is 41 x 53 inches and I quilted with Gueterman Sulky in my favorite soft white 1071 colour. The quilting pattern mirrors the diamonds.

I added raw edge applique on the back to form a little good night message for Anya.

I really enjoyed sewing the diamond pattern and I will definitively use it again soon. Let's hope Anya likes the quilt too.

Diamonds are a girls' best friend

Don't you agree ?

Of course you do, what woman doesn't. My goddaughter will be christened in a couple of weeks time and that of course deserves a present and what better to make than a quilt.

I discussed the fabric for the quilt with my friend Leigh already months ago. She really likes 'Sherbet Pips' so I grabbed my Pips stash but soon thought that I wanted a few other highlights in there so I started adding other fabrics from existing stash.

Having wanted to make a diamond quilt for a long time I started cutting strips and then 60 degree diamonds and a few hours later I had the first layout.

This is a crib sized quilt so I hopefully will manage to finish it over the course of next weekend.

 No rest for the wicked.

Stash Note 35

Today's stash note is the lovely new line from Aneela Hoey 'Little' Apples. I love the colours and in particular the dark green/brown palette. The design are typical of Aneela's style. I possibly like this collection even more than the previous one from Aneela.

My favourite prints are the one with the pieces of clothing and .....

also those with the little turtles on.

This stash of fat quaters was bought at Fabricworm.
